Two of Virginia Beach’s advanced schools, Old Donation Center (ODC) and Kemps Landing Magnet School (KLMS), were designed to be combined into one facility called Old Donation School (ODS). The existing elementary school at the ODS site was planned for demolition in order to make room for the much larger, 280,000 SF, 3-story combined facility that would house both the elementary and middle school programs. With a focus on preforming and visual arts, the new school and grounds support roughly 1500 students and 120 staff. The site combines programs for sustainability, natural sciences, art, and athletics through the use of a multipurpose trail which connects a series of spaces surrounding the building and athletic fields. WPL lead the efforts for a site selection and feasibility study to pick the site, and was retained to survey and master plan the chosen site and provide complete construction documents for implementation. The ODS landscape was designed using sustainably meadow management concepts, indigenous plant species, and well adapted plant species. The ODS site is not irrigated and relies on natural rainfall to sustain itself.
