WPL served as Landscape Architects for the Barry Art Museum working in concert with Saunders-Crouse Architects. The Landscape Design is a complete departure from a typical college landscape with the overall design focus on the Art of the Landscape as it related to the architecture. Following the strong architectural lines of the building the landscape design shows sweeping forms and colors in pavers concrete and plants. Artistic forms in a major water feature radiate from the exterior sculpture garden with tiers of planting from an aquatic level rising up to create a beautiful backdrop. This is truly an example of landscape as art.
The Barry Art Museum is located on a major corner of the ODU Campus that has sat vacant as a gravel parking lot for decades. Nestled between the TED Convocation Center and its supporting parking garage the new Barry Arts Museum is not an architectural ICON at the southern gateway of the ODU campus. The Barry Family philanthropic contributions to the ODU Foundation open the doors to this opportunity to house a portion of the Barry Art collection. WPL served as Landscape Architects for the Barry Art Museum working in concert with Saunders-Crouse Architects. Following the strong architectural lines of the building the landscape design shows sweeping forms and colors in pavers concrete and plants. Artistic forms in a major water feature radiate from the exterior sculpture garden with tiers of planting from an aquatic level rising up to create a beautiful backdrop. WPL designed a unique setting for the architecture with contemporary flair not yet seen on the ODU campus. The Landscape Design is a complete departure from a typical college landscape with the overall design focus on the Art of the Landscape as it related to the architecture. WPL designed all exterior hardscapes, rain gardens, stormwater management plantings, planting design and consulted on site lighting, and irrigation. The landscape creates strong connections to the campus and is welcoming to visitors and students alike. This is truly an example of landscape as art and exemplifies the commitment that the Barry family has to the Arts.
