WPL worked with Cooper Carry Architects to provide surveying and landscape architectural services for the $146 million, 22-story hotel and conference center that was constructed in downtown Norfolk at the corner of Main Street and Granby Street. WPL was tasked with schematic site design and design development for ground-level site improvements and an amenities-level outdoor terrace, as well as planting plan construction documentation for the entire site.
The design of the building is unique in that it brings the streetscape into the building on the ground-level through the use of a 100-foot tall glass atrium wall. WPL recommended pulling the paving pattern from the inside of the building to the outside walkways and plazas, and adding tree wells on the interior in order to plant canopy trees which will mirror the streetscape. WPL recommended street furnishings, pavement material and other site improvements to create a cohesive environment surrounding the building. The amenities level rooftop terrace was also designed in a similar manner, working closely with the architect to achieve the clients’ vision of creating intimate outdoor gathering spaces surrounded by trees and lush, potted plants.
