In 2016, Virginia Beach reaffirmed its place on the map with another reason to visit the city and enjoy the oceanfront, to get fit and healthy! The Virginia Beach Oceanfront now includes a public fitness park for its residents and visitors. The Hillier Ignite foundation, a not for profit organization founded by local businessman Luke Hillier, came to WPL with an exciting idea to give back to the community by building an outdoor park with play equipment geared for adults, where fitness was the focus.

The fitness park design includes equipment that provides the widest variety of opportunity for users. With an open path in the middle and two groups of equipment on either side, the equipment is situated so that beach goers can still access the water from the boardwalk stairs and ramp. The equipment is grouped together based on typical use and accessibility. In addition to the existing concrete boardwalk ramp, the park improvements include a wooden walkway for ADA wheelchair access over the sand. The walkway has bump-outs for observation, special wheelchair access, and resting spots for users.

The equipment directly adjacent to the walkway was designed to accommodate users who may be in a wheelchair, or need to be in a sitting position for a work out. This equipment includes elements such as parallel bars, a low bar, pull up bars, a balance beam, and a multi-purpose post. Moving away from the walkway, the equipment increases in challenge and size to include a horizontal ladder, a rope climb, travel rings, a fitness climber, level rings, a low slackline, and taller versions of the parallel bars, low bar, and pull up bars. No matter what level of capability, the Hillier Ignite Fitness Park has a challenge for any user.
