Hermitage Elementary School was originally constructed in the early 1960s and has been serving the Bayside area of Virginia Beach since that time. In 2002, Virginia Beach City Public Schools selected the design team that WPL collaborated with to design a replacement for this aging facility.
WPL provided the site planning, site engineering, and landscape architectural services. This project was eventually certified by the program for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (L.E.E.D.), initiated by the U.S. Green Building Council, for its “green” developmental practices in construction and design.
The WPL survey project team laid the foundation for the environmental sustainable practices that earned the school its prestigious award. Hermitage Elementary School became one of the first L.E.E.D. certified schools for Virginia and the first school in the Virginia Beach City area.
