Project Detail
WPL is proud to be working with the Chesapeake Public Art Committee on a project memorializing the tragic events of 9/11/01. On the same day an earth quake shook Hampton Roads a steel beam arrived in Chesapeake. Shortly thereafter the Committee attained a stone from the field in Pennsylvania and a granite block from the Pentagon. The design includes a platform for these artifacts, a ceremonial space, and a wall to which some of the final messages between victims and families will be inscribed. A broken circle will represent the impact on our country. The lone ensign will represent our unshakable resolve and unification. The arrangement of elements within the break will represent our recovery and response. A garden will further the notion of this recovery and provide year-round color and texture. WPL looks forward in assisting the Committee with realizing this fine addition to the Chesapeake City Park.
