PRESS RELEASE: Senior Associate and Landscape Architect, Jarrod Katzer, Unanimously Elected as Vice Chair of Virginia Beach’s Open Space Advisory Committee

Virginia Beach, Virginia, May 23, 2023 – Jarrod Katzer, a Senior Associate and Landscape Architect, has been unanimously elected as the Vice Chair of Virginia Beach’s Open Space Advisory Committee. This esteemed committee plays a vital role in advising the City of Virginia Beach on various properties that are suitable for municipal purposes, including
recreation, preservation, and stormwater mitigation by leveraging their expertise in landscape architecture, urban planning, environmental conservation, and related fields.
The committee members contribute to the city’s efforts in enhancing the quality of life for its residents and protecting natural resources.
The Open Space Advisory Committee in Virginia Beach evaluates properties based on ecological significance, recreational value, historical importance, and suitability for stormwater mitigation to determine their potential for open space use. They work to identify areas that can be designated as parks, recreational spaces, or preserved for conservation purposes. Collaborating closely with city departments, community organizations, and stakeholders, the committee ensures a comprehensive approach to open space planning. They engage in public outreach, gather resident feedback, and conduct research to inform their recommendations.
With Jarrod Katzer serving as the Vice Chair along side the recently elected Chair, Clay Bernick, the committee is well-positioned to continue its crucial work in advocating for the preservation and development of open spaces for Virginia Beach. The Open Space Advisory Committee was established by City Council in May 2001. The mission of this committee is to research and evaluate undeveloped properties throughout the City for possible acquisition to preserve as open space in support of the Virginia Beach Outdoors Plan. The Open Space Advisory Committee reports to the Parks & Recreation Commission and to City Council. Open Space Advisory Committee meetings are held on the fourth Monday of every other month at 3 pm and are open to the public.
