The Something in the Water (SITW) concert series is on the mind of every resident in Hampton Roads right now but did you know that this organization is behind the updating of Seatack Elementary School’s urban garden? The garden is getting a complete overhaul thanks to various donors including Pharrell Williams, Timberland and Virginia Natural Gas. Inspired by the students during a design charrette, WPL helped synthesize the children’s ideas to create a new garden masterplan. With the help of Visionscapes of Virginia Beach as the contractor, the garden is scheduled to be completed on April 26 as part of SITW.
The new design triples the gardening space and includes edible tree species, pollinator shrubs, improved arbor gateway, outdoor classroom, new greenhouse and cold frames, a gathering circle, compost bins and various artwork pieces. The garden will serve as an important educational space for the school and community alike and harvested fruits and vegetables will be used within the school’s cafeteria to teach the students a valuable lesson on where food comes from.
WPL is proud and honored to have been part of such a great project that benefits Seatack Elementary students and the community. The video shows the process of the students helping to determine what they need and do not need for their urban garden and how they ultimately designed their space with the help of our Landscape Architects.
WPL services associated with this project included land surveying and site design to include the student design charrette and site design masterplan.
