WPL has had the honor of working on numerous unique projects, many of which were acknowledged at the City of Virginia Beach’s Planning Commission Design Awards Program. Honor Awards were presented for the following categories: the Adventure Park at the Virginia Aquarium for Public Facilities, Kellam High School for Sustainable Development, Hilton Garden Inn / 34th Street Stage / Lagerheads Cafe for Strategic Growth Areas, and the Residential Developments of Old Beach Homes at 417, 419 and 421 24th 1/2 Street as well as 416, 418 and 420 25th Street. A Merit Award was presented in the Strategic Growth Areas category for Widgeon Professional Centre.
The Adventure Park at the Aquarium, while new, did not come without careful planning to create a course that fit into the Aquarium’s program seamlessly. This park would be an attraction for tourists and local visitors aiming to explore and learn about the ecosystem of trees while gaining confidence, having fun, and staying physically fit. WPL’s team of landscape architects, civil engineers, and land surveyors acted as a cohesive team to make the new Kellam High School exceptional among other schools in this region. The recently-built Hilton Garden Inn, located at 34th Street and Atlantic Avenue on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, was completed in May of 2014. This iconic 128,192 square foot, 14-story hotel site shares space with the open-air Lagerheads Cafe and the new 34th Street stage. While the Widgeon Professional Centre, a 9,664 SF, two-story professional office building, represents the first phase of a two-building commercial development in the Lynnhaven Strategic Growth Area.
We have found that the true accomplishment is to be able to work together to create designs that benefit others who will get the most out of these projects. We value the beauty in our designs in hopes that future generations are able to enjoy the planned places and spaces.
